The ultimate wood for masts and spars is sitka spruce. check a.l. condon. good stuff is getting harder and harder to acquire. like crag cay said, google "wooden masts" & there should be alot of information.. In my previous boats, i've always used an aluminum mast (and a carbon fiber one on the tippecanoe t37). for this vintage marblehead high flyer sun wind ii though, in keeping with the tradition of the 1940's/1950's, i thought it would be fun to attempt a wooden mast.. Having recently built a nice little dinghy from boatplans.dk i took it on the water this summer. i was very pleased with most aspects and quite proud that i had build the entire boat including mast and sails..

Making a square, hollow mast. hollow masts are stronger than solid masts of the same weight. they also have the ability if distributing flaws (knots and such) so you don't need to find perfect wood..
