Model Boat Motor Suppression

The photos in this article are from the author’s boat, a 48” 1/20 scale model of pt109. the model is powered by three graupner speed 700 ball bearing turbo neodymium magnet motors. the power supply is a 12v 7ah gel battery. despite the heavy boat and battery, the boat planes beautifully, and is very realistic at speed.. Hello colin.. there was a very good description of motor suppression in the mmi plans handbook a couple of years ago.. using disc capacitors, values were stated at 47 nf across the motor terminals, and 100 nf across each motor connection to the motor can, keeping the capacitor tails ( wire ) as short as possible at the motor terminal end.. Electrickery . motors used in model boats are called dc motors, i.e. the motor rotates when a direct current is applied. you don't need to know the "why's and wherefore's", just take my word for it. batteries supply direct current and so are the most suitable power source..

Hi all. just after a bit of advice with regards to wether a mfa 850 motor will require suppressors fitted. if so what size suppressors will i require.. The mtroniks 'power m400' brushed motor it is ideal for use in small scale model boats running between 6 and 12v. suppression capacitor fitted to help reduce any interference effects in your model standard pitch mounting holes of 16.0mm, m2.5. running at 12v, at maximum efficiency, the m400 rpm = 10000rpm and pull around 1amp.. Hi, how can i calculate the correct value of suppressor for an electric motor? i have a salvaged 9.6v motor from a rechargeable vacuum cleaner, the only info on the motor is 9.6v, 21000rpm and brs-540s6528. i presume that is a 540 size motor but apart from that i am in the dark. any help would be gratefully appreciated. cheers, robs. colin bishop.
