The service center said that most boats make a knocking noise when turning hard over and that i may just have a boat that is 10 - 15% loader then most. my issue is that i had never heard the knocking as loud as it was last weekend, so this is a new noise or louder then before. we will see if the motor alignment helps..
Piston pin noise is similar to valve train noise. the noise is unique because you will hear a double knocking sound caused by the lack of oil and excessive clearance between the piston pin and the piston. a piston pin attaches the connecting rod to the piston.. Engine starts and runs at all speeds ok - would describe noise as tappet noise if the engine had valves. engine is oil injected - may have a weak fuel pump.. This noise in the starboard drive (or motor i guess is possible) has been the same since i bought the boat 5 seasons ago (150 hours). i have asked the mechanic that has done all the work on the boat and he said he has not heard the noise. this makes sense because he is on dry land and has only run the boat on muffs so the exhaust is loud..
