If i remember correctly, the bilge float switch is wired directly to the battery with a separate in-line fuse. it sounds like you disconnected the ground for the bilge pump to shut it off, which means the float switch is stll hot and is probably backfeeding the bilge switch.. Thanks everyone for your responses and isolated the problem and it was a bad auto switch. connection points had rusted and were making a constant connection and thus causing pump to run all the time with switch on or off.. Alright so i got a chance to get in the boat yesterday and check out what i thought was my bilge stuck on. well i flipped the batt switch on and i get the humming noise and stick my head down inside the motor compartment and the noise is coming from the upper area just under the deck. there is a motor up there running..
I have a drip shaft in my boat and i noticed that once in the a while the float switch gets stuck in the up position and makes the bilge pump run. don't want to come to the dock and find dead batteries and a hull full of water.. Based on my recent adventure with a stuck float switch, replace the switch asap. it just isn't worth the risk. my bilge pump switch had stuck on a few times and a quick wack with the scrub brush solved the problem. then without my knowledge, the aft switch stuck in the off position when i really needed it.. Graeme pullen shows you some totally awesome tips on how to fix a boat bilge pump. he gives you some simple, easy tips on the bilge pump itself and how it works, as well as the steps that you need.
