Muriatic acid, otherwise known as hydrochloric acid, is a common choice for an acid wash. it is reasonably safe for the aluminum and fairly easy to come by. keep in mind that this acid is very dangerous and should be kept away from pets and children.. Aluminum acid wash. foaming aluminum acid wash and brightener. acid truck wash for fleet washing. fast acting aluminum acid cleaner starts working on contact. contains inhibitors to prevent future corrosion. concentrated janitorial, industrial, commercial cleaner. biodegradable. Soooo, the boat yard guy did a little "test" section wash w. acid on my hull to show me what that result would look like. very nice! smooth, and shiny. so i said "heck yes, do it!". check back two days later and i'm not so sure that i'm happy with the job. stains, and patches of dry chalky stuff..
You can acid wash an old boat so it looks 'new'; that is the dull silver gray of the underlying parent metal is always under the oxides on the surface. if the 'little flowers' or white spots start, you can stop them, usually, by acid washing but just pressure is not going to get the oxides or surface contaminants.. For example, to protect your aluminum fishing boat, treat the surface with aluminum boat etch wash, then apply totalboat aluminum boat barrier coat, and finish by overcoating with totalboat alumipaint af antifouling bottom paint specifically formulated for pontoon boats and aluminum fishing boats.. Use etch wash on bare aluminum, galvanized steel, and other non-ferrous metals. it's great for pontoon boats, duck boats, fishing boats, and other aluminum-hulled vessels. to use, simply apply aluminum boat etch wash, allow it to remain on the surface for five minutes without drying, then rinse with water and dry..
