Boat metals consist of steel, copper, zinc and brass metal. sacrificial anodes of zinc strategically placed on the boat help dissipate electrolysis to keep metal corrosion at bay. if the anodes have been placed and maintained properly, they prevent metal corrosion. checking the electrolysis of your boat can prevent severe corrosion.. Welding a new keel onto a 16 foot johnboat. electrolysis damage destroyed the center strake of this boat, causing it to take on water. after this repair it will be like new.. I have an aluminum boat that has some electroylsis damage showing up in the bottom of the boat. would like information on how to stop and repair this problem..

Electrolysis is actually the opposite action to galvanic corrosion so the distinction is not trivial semantics as some people suggest. electrolysis is the forced introduction of an electrical current in an electrolyte (water) to cause a chemical reaction to separate the components of the water. this process produces hydrogen and oxygen.. Re: electrolysis of aluminum boats go for the zinc. there won't be much electrolysis in fresh water anyway, unless you're in a hot marina, in which case the zinc should work ok for that. i have a fiberglass boat in a sort-of-hot marina, and an ob. the original motor zincs were zinc, and when they were used up, i switched to magnesium.. Trailerable aluminium boats have been around for 50 years or so and while at first they were rudimentary open rowing dinghies, the larger ones even handled a small outboard. as trailerboating developed, so too did aluminium boats and by the late 1960s small aluminium boat construction was coming of age..
